A CONCISE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE HISTORY OF TOY SUBMARINES

Onglet

There are no books dedicated to toy submarines as such other than the one Fabrice Mestrot is writing (2008? 2009?); an abundant bibliography about toy boats – including submarines – is available, but you have to look for it! These are often limited issues, sometimes self-published, or luxurious editions.

Where to find them?

- At a few specialized bookshops, like ,,la Librairie du Jouet ancien et de la Poupée,, in Remiremont, in the French Vosges;
- On the Internet: Chapitre.com and Amazon.com.;
- At dedicated shows, like Toymania or Festitoys,and at sales.

4-Special effects and cinema

The genre’s pionneer is Ray Harryhausen, well-known for its frame-by-frame animations in sword-and-sandal movies like “”Jason and the Argonauts,” “The 7th voyage of Sinbad,” etc., he is also the creator of the special effects in “It Came from Beneath the Sea” and especially Cy Enfield’s “Mysterious Island” in 1964. A must-read.

- Ray Harryhausen & Tony Dalton, “Ray Harryhausen, an Animated Life,” prefaced by none other than Ray Bradbury! ed. Billboard Books,2003;
- Ray Harryhausen & Tony Dalton, “the Art of Ray Harryhausen,” ed.Billboard Books,2005.

I know that works dedicated to the making of Disney’s “20000 Leagues under the Sea”, “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” or “Fantastic Voyage” have been published, but I wish you luck in finding them! If you have them, I’ll take them...
Richard Fleisher’s filmography was written by Stéphane Bourgoin; you can find lots of information about the filming of “20000 Leagues Under the Seas” and “Fantastic Voyage”. “Filmo, filmo 16,Richard Fleisher,” éditions EDILIG,Paris,1986.
-The Star Wars saga goes on with the collective book published by Nathan in October 2007, “Vaisseaux et engins de la saga-plans secrets.” On pp. 20-21, the plans of the Gungan submarine. Ed Dorling KindersleyLtd, c 2007Lucasfilms ltd, Nathan for the French edition.

5- Various magazines

- “Vie du Jouet” used to be an important source of information and resources (auctions, quotations, ads, an issue was even dedicated to the JEP Nautilus). Unfortunately this magazine disappeared and was replaced by “Chineurs et Colllectionneurs,” the “toys” section of which is, alas, much less furnished...
- “Jouets de Collection,” rather electric-train-oriented, sometimes publishes articles on brands.
- The late “Cinémonde,” published in the 50-60s, had photo-stories adapted from movies like “It Came from Beneath the Sea.” You can find them in specialized shops at the Paris “Puces.”
- R.C.Marine dedicated two special issues to submarines in 2007, with information on a few radio-guided models (Disney Nautilus...)

6 - Other sources

- Sale rooms catalogues, a short selection of which follows:

1) Christie’s Catalogue, sale of the 20 July 1989,ref:MLD3392,Coluzzi Collection sale.

2) France Chartre, Galerie des ventes de Chartre, catalogues for the 15 October,10 November 2001, and 9 October 2004.

-Lucien Ades published in his time recorded stories adapted from the French version of Disney movies (song, music, narrative text). That series of course included that about 20000 Leagues under the Seas.
- The Beatles album “Yellow Submarine” launched an invasion of merchandise, including the submarine (see the dedicated section).
- Slide shows, sold as plastic binoculars with a dozen extracts from movies mounted on a revolving cardboard disc you turned by pressing a button;
- Directors’ filmographies, especially Richard Fleisher, who directed 20000 Leagues Under the Seas and Fantastic Voyage.

To conclude, this chapter would not be complete without quoting two basic and concise works on the history of submarines:

- “L Odyssée des sous-marins,” by Neil Mallard, ed.Gallimard,collection ,,les yeux de la découverte,, 2004;
- “100 ans de sous-marins,” special issue of the magazine “Marines et Forces Navales,” November 1999,no 2;
Let us mention very complete but hyper-specialized bibliographies about toys in general at the end of chapters in Jac Remise and Jacques Milet’s works.

As a conclusion, I invite you to read what is in my mind the best “undersea” novel since Jules Verne: Arthur C. Clarke’s “ The Deep Range”. 1973 Albin Michel for the French translation.
