The museum's Letter N°5

E-mail Print PDF
As forecast in February 2010 we should exceed 200 000 visitors this year. Welcome to our new contacts from Russia, Sweden and Ireland. The accidental destruction of part of our photo archives delayed the update and the installation of a series of chronicles and nice pieces in the various sections, as well as the reorganization of the museum’s reserves and technical sections; the damage has been fixed...
Since February things have gone well: more subs from Science-Fiction or comics: witness the Atragon made by Bernard Brimeur (in Anthology of the Science-Fiction submarine), Blake and Mortimer’s Sub-Glacior ( in Submarines in comics), the octopus from « Mysterious Island » born from Ray Harryhausen’s fertile brain and made by Jean-Yves Martin (in Tentacles), yet another « Yellow Submarine » diorama (in Dioramas), The Japanese « Alpha » Nautilus from the movie « Latitude Zero, » and we promise much more for 2011: the diorama of « It Came from Beneath the Sea, » a very rare model of the Calypso, Tardi’s Piacodus...
On the other hand, delirious prices persist: we’ve seen a JEP Nautilus... at 1250 euros!!!!!! An East-German Dolphin (in Electrically-Powered subs) at... $1200 US. Let’s say it again: DO NOT BUY AT SUCH PRICES!!!!!!!!! This is sheer speculation, not collecting; no chance of later reselling your finds and getting a « little extra. » Better visit the American and English websites; see the magnificent Disney Nautilus (EFX) now for pre-order (4’ for a still respectable $2000 US!) or the reissue of the Japanese Nautilus from « The Secret of Blue Water) by Aoshima for $500 US; if you want to spend money, as well do it on items that are worth it!
Finally, the movie world is alive with rumors about newly unveiled or imagined wonders: a remake of « Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea » in 2012-2013? Or more seriously, the new version of « 20000 Leagues Under the Sea » produced by Disney, maybe directed by David Fincher (« Seven, » « The Fight Club »....), in fact a prequel to the 1954 movie. Likewise we are still awaiting the DVD edition of the « Man from Atlantis » series and a reissue of the Seaquest DSV by Revell or Moebius... Let’s dream a bit! »
